Programs

Your PTA has a wealth of programs to support and implement in your school. Among them are Community Concern, Education, Health, Parent Involvement, Awards, Grants, Reflections, Scholarships, SMARTS, and Founders Day. Information on these subjects can be found under the heading of "Programs" at: www.capta.org

Arts

Extensive research during the past decade now confirms the arts improve academic and personal success. Real education reform must "Bring back the Arts". Please join our efforts to help parents, teachers and legislators understand the importance of the arts. The California State PTA wants to create advocates for quality arts education at every school in California.

For more information, please access the California State PTA web site under Programs/SMARTS.

Reflections

The National PTA Reflections Program is an arts recognition and achievement program for students. The Reflections Program provides opportunities for students to express themselves creatively and to receive positive recognition for original works of art inspired by pre-selected theme, while increasing community awareness on the importance of the arts in education.

About The Reflections Program

The Reflections Program was established in 1969 by National PTA board member Mary Lou Anderson. Since that time, more than 10 million students have participated in the program. The program's longevity and participation figures attest to its strength. The excitement and enthusiasm that the program generates for children, parents, schools and communities is unmatched.

Participation and appreciation for the arts is the Reflections Program's goal. Although the Reflections Program follows a "contest" format, winning should not be the emphasis.

Participation in the Reflections Program is a great way for students to explore and learn about various art forms. Creating art is a valuable learning process that challenges students to use their critical thinking skills as well as their creative talents to create art that supports a specific theme.

Students may submit an entry in any of the six arts areas listed below. Only original works of art are accepted. Depending on state and local PTA guidelines, students may enter more than one work of art. The six arts areas are as follows:

  • Literature
  • Musical composition
  • Photography
  • Visual arts
  • Dance choreography
  • Film/video production

Participation in the Reflections Program is organized by school grade. Student works are critiqued against others in the same grad division. This allows recognition and judging of artworks by appropriate developmental age and skill levels. The four grade divisions are as follows:

  • Primary - Preschool - Grade 2 or up to age 7
  • Intermediate - Grades 3-5 or ages 8-10
  • Middle/Junior - Grades 6-8 or ages 11-13
  • Senior - Grades 9-12 or ages 14+

The Reflections program is available to all students attending PTA and PTSA units in good standing. Home-schooled students may participate if their home school PTA is participating in the program. Entries are forwarded through channels. Each unit, council and PTA district establishes their own deadline dates, allowing adequate time for displaying and judging of entries. PTA units should acquire deadline dates from their council and PTA district. Only PTA districts may submit entries to the California State PTA.

Founders Day/H.S.A.

Founders Day

For more than a century, National PTA has provided support, information and resources to families focused on the health and education of children. The organization was founded in 1897 in Washington DC as the National Congress of Mothers by Alice McLellan Birney and Phoebe Apperson Hearst. If not for these women and their vision and determination, there would not be a PTA - an organization that has been woven into the very fabric of American life.

By whatever name it has been known, National PTA was created to meet a profound challenge: to better the lives of children. And today, it continues to flourish because PTA has never lost sight of its goal: to change the lives of children across our great nation for the better.

Honorary Service Award

While paying tribute to the three Founders and all who worked with them, it is also an appropriate time to show appreciation to those in your own PTA and community who have been dedicated advocates for children.

The Honorary Service Award, Continuing Service Award, Golden Oak Service Award and Very Special Person Award are bestowed on very special people to honor them for their outstanding efforts on behalf of children. Donations may also be made. (Note: Awards may be presented throughout the year.)

Health

The Health Commission works to promote effective health education programs in schools and communities that offer children, youth, and families the skills needed to make healthy choices. Through legislative action, the Health Commission advocates for statewide health programs for children, youth, and families. Commission members serve on various statewide committees that address mental health, physical health, and environmental health issues. The Health Commission supports efforts that bring together concerned people, agencies and organizations to address the needs of children, youth, and families and assist them in establishing healthy behaviors.

For more information on how you can become active in the health issues of your school population, please access the State PTA web site on Programs and Health. www.capta.org
